Our big, first step with the iPads was toggling the internet on and off to help save the battery life throughout the day as well as help manage bandwidth.
Below are the steps that we used to talk about turning airplane mode on/off.
1) Press the home button
2) Press the gear icon (settings) on the tray at the bottom. (I moved the settings to the tray for quick access)
3) Locate the airplane icon.

*This was a bit confusing since when airplane mode says "on" the internet is actually off. I talked about an umbrella. I said that when it says "on" that the umbrella is open and internet can't get to the iPad. When it says "off" the umbrella is closed and internet can get to the iPad. My students were pros at toggling the internet on and off.
