Create an account
The first thing is to create a GMail account that you will designate for your class. An example of this could be: [email protected]. **Make sure you are the only one with the password to access this GMail account
Student Emails
You do not need to actually create an individual account for each student.
Third Party Sites/Apps
Most sites such as Dropbox, Evernote as well as many apps require an email address for each account. Google has a unique feature. You can add a "+" sign and a number/letter to your GMail address. This is kind of like you are putting a splitter on your GMaill account.
Splitting One email
When signing up for third party site accounts/apps, often times you need an email. My first graders do not have email accounts. In addition, I wanted a way to control their email. So the solution was to add a "+" symbol and a number to my original [email protected] email
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected] and so on.
Below is an example of a spreadsheet that I used.

**Even though I have a [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], I still access all of them by going to the GMail account [email protected] account to monitor/manage all of my "split" emails.
Creating Labels in GMail
When you create accounts on third party sites/apps, you usually get a confirmation email. When you sign up with all your +1, +2, +3, Gmail emails, they will show up in your main email account ([email protected]) without showing if it was for the +1, +2, +3 account. This is where labels and filters (see Creating Filters below) come into play.
A) Log into your main GMail account ([email protected]).
B) Click the gear in the top right and click settings and then labels

C) Scroll down to labels and click create new label
D) Create one main label (For example I did my class code and school year: iPads1f)
E) After creating your main label, create a label for each of your "split GMail emails" that you made (For example, under my iPads1f, I made a label for each number 1-20) Make sure you nest them under your main label (iPads1f)
F) Now you should be able to click on your main label (iPads1f) and all the sub menus should appear.

Creating Filters in GMail
The reason I created filters in my [email protected] account was to sort and manage any emails coming into this main account. Remember, I signed up for third party sites/apps with all my +1, +2, +3, +4, etc. accounts. This means that anytime an email is sent to any of those numbered accounts, it will only show up into the "main" [email protected] account. I need a way to sort those received emails so I know if it intended for +1, +2, +3 and so on. I already created labels, so I need to apply a filter so that email intended for [email protected] goes into label "1," email intended for [email protected] goes into label "2" and so on. Read below for this process.
1) In your "main" GMail account ([email protected]), click the gear in the top right again and then settings.

2) Locate the filters tab and click it. Scroll to the bottom and click create a new filter.
3) After clicking "create a new filter, fill in your first split email (ex. [email protected]) in the "TO" box to create your first filter.
4) After you fill in the "TO" box, click create filter with this search. Then check the "apply the label box" and choose the corresponding label that matches the numbered email. (For [email protected] I would put it in the number "1" label.
5) Repeat this process for all your other split GMail address (+2, +3, +4, etc). It takes some time but is worth it in the long wrong.
**You are all set. Now anytime an email is sent to one of the split, numbered emails, it will still show up in your inbox of your main account ([email protected]). However, if you expand your labels you created, there will be a bold number next to the label that the email was intended for in your inbox.
So if an email was intended for [email protected], it would still show up in my inbox, but it would also show up in the label "2" so I know exactly which split email it was meant for in the inbox.
